Band promise a tubthumping time

SANDWICHED between gigs at Aldershot's West End Centre and Gateshead's The Sage, Chumbawamba come to Worksop town centre's Acorn Theatre on Saturday 14th March.

With a memorable past that includes protest songs year like Fitzwilliam in the Miners' strike and throwing water over John Prescott, they've moved on and their protests are more subtle but still very telling!

In one of AcornFolk's highest profile gigs gigs in the current season, the 21st Century Chumba now features acoustic guitars, accordion and trumpet, five-part harmonies, a bucketful of attitude and songs from a new 25-track album called The Boy Bands Have Won.

Chumba most definitely aren`t like other bands. From their 1984 formation in the anarcho-punk age they have gone on to play music ranging from pop-influenced dance music, acappella choral music and world music through to their current acoustic folk music.

Some 20 years ago they made their first album, Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records, as a response to Live Aid.

Chumbawamba began with a mission to be interesting, arresting, literate and understanding.

They have remained fiercely critical of much they see around them and this is always wrapped up in folk music of the highest quality.

This shows in their current album which is warm and gentle in tone but caustic in intent which plays with culture including looking back on their own culture and development.
