Enjoy a break from a hectic Christmas with a visit to Belton House near Grantham

It may be a tranquil space today, but 100 years ago Belton Park was home to tens of thousands of soldiers from the Machine Gun Corps and, as part of a year long contemporary art project focusing on Belton at this time, an audio experience has been created which guides the listener on an evocative walk through this historic landscape. You just need to pick up headphones from the main entrance of the house to enjoy this unique experience.

The mansion is also open for below stairs tours where visitors can hear what life was like for the Belton servants in 1915. As well as preparing the festivities for the Brownlow family, they also welcomed the soldiers of the MGC to dine over Christmas. Whilst most of the house is now put to bed’ for winter, the dining room has been dressed as it would have been for a Christmas feast 100 years ago.

For the first time in its 40 year history, Belton’s outdoor adventure playground is open all year round, so why not bring the kids to work off all that Christmas chocolate? The miniature train is also running daily, with an extended track winding through the woods and back to the brand new station.
