Bring your brollies as Louth's new film club launches its first season

Get those boxes of popcorn ready! A new film club, Louth Cine Circle, is all set to screen its first season with five nostalgic comedies.

And to mark the milestone, cinema-goers are being encouraged to dress up for the club’s ‘Films About Films’ mini-festival.

They might even want to take an umbrella because one of the movies to be shown, on Thursday, May 14 at 7 pm, is the 1952 hit, ‘Singin’ In The Rain’.

Says the season organiser, Jim Drake: “This is a classic musical about the birth of the ‘talkies’, starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor. Umbrellas are very much encouraged.”

All five films are being screened at the Playhouse Cinema on Cannon Street in Louth, and all cover different aspects of film-making.

The season kicks off on Sunday, May 10 at 2 pm with ‘The Smallest Show On Earth’, starring Peter Sellers, which dates back to 1957.

Drake says: “It features a young couple who inherit a small, derelict northern cinema. So we hope to create a period atmosphere and invite all to come in period costume if they wish.”

On Monday, May 18 at 7 pm, ‘The Front’ (1976), starring Woody Allen and Zero Mostel in a comedy about McCarthyite blacklisting in the 1950s, will be screened.

‘Adaptation’ (2002), featuring Nicolas Cage (twice) as twin scriptwriters, with Meryl Streep, will be offered to film fans on Thursday, May 21 at 7 pm.

And on Sunday, May 24 at 7 pm, ‘Son Of Rambow’ (2007), a British independent film about two boys recreating the 1982 action thriller ‘First Blood’, brings the curtain down on the mini-festival.

Annual membership of Louth Cine Circle is £15, which offers the opportunity to suggest films to be screened, discounts on tickets (£6 instead of normal prices) and advance notice of shows.

Anyone interested in joining should email [email protected] or go the club’s Facebook page, Louth Cine Circle.

The club was set up earlier this year, with the aim of pleasing film enthusiasts “who love modern greats, cult classics, genre seasons, retrospectives or themed events.”

However, the organisers stressed that the new organisation will not be competing with the well-established Louth Film Club, saying: “We are offering something different.”
