BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey thanks locals for a cuppa after escaping major smash on A17 with minor injuries

The sports presenter, formerly a front man with BBC Sport, was being chauffeured back from Lancashire having covered the Blackburn Rovers FA Cup game against Newcastle United for the digital channel last night when he was involved in a collision on the A17 at East Heckington, reported at about 1.39am, according to police.

He posted a relieved message on his Twitter feed this afternoon with a video, saying: “Rather eventful journey home from Blackburn last night. Thankfully only a few bumps and bruises.

“I just want to call out the Lincolnshire Police, the brilliant local fire service...and the lovely family in East Heckington who got the kettle on❤. All great, kind folk. Thanks x”

The front end of the Mercedes Benz he was travelling in was written off by the impact when it apparently collided with the central reservation.

Two occupants of the car received minor injuries, according to a Lincolnshire Police spokesman. A fire crew from Donington went out to the incident and mopped up a fuel spill and the wreckage was cleared.

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue replied to the presenter’s tweet saying: “Thank you Jake! We will pass on your thanks to our Donington crew who attended.”

Local East Heckington resident Beth Nixon and her family came to Jake’s aid at the roadside in her onesie!

She tweeted in reply to him with photos taken of her with him, saying: “So glad I met this lovely and amazing man early hours this morning, I hope you are okay this morning!

“Yes I look terrible as I was in bed before I heard the accident happen! But I’m so glad I came out and made sure you was okay and that you liked my cup of tea☺️”

Jake replied: “The cup of tea made the night. I don’t usually take sugar!!!! You and you’re family were great. Thanks so much xxxxxxx”

Beth’s big sister Leonnie Nixon, also from East Heckington, also replied to Jake’s tweeted thanks, posting a picture of herself with the TV man, saying: “You’re more than welcome, it was a pleasure to have been some help towards you both. I hope you both have a speedy recovery and someone was definitely watching over the both of you last night. I hope you had a safe journey home.”❤️

Leonnie told the Standard that her mum even gave Jake and his chauffeur a lift to a nearby hotel after the crash.

She said: “He is honestly the most genuine and loveliest person I’ve met.

“We stayed there until the police said that both Jake and his chauffeur was allowed to leave the site of the accident. Then my mum took Jake to the nearest hotel.

“His local taxi firm from Norwich was already on their way to collect him and due to there being no rooms available my mum then drove his chauffeur to a hotel near Sleaford where he’d stay the night until the company he worked for sent someone to collect himself and his belongings the following morning.”
