Lights, camera, action! New film club set to be launched in Louth

Lights, camera, action! A second film club, offering “something different”, is set to be launched in Louth.

The town already boasts the award-winning Louth Film Club, which was set up in 2005 to offer a selection of modern arthouse films from around the world, plus a range of classics, most of which have not been seen on the big screen for many years.

Now a club concentrating on English language movies, and provisionally called the Louth Cine Circle, is in the pipeline.

Its first annual general meeting is to be held at The Miller’s Daughter pub on Northgate on Thursday, February 12 at 7 pm when film buffs are invited to go along.

The organisers, Jim Drake and Clare Baker, are hoping that fans will share their ideas to help shape a vibrant, new film community for Louth and the surrounding district.

Jim said: “If you love modern greats, cult classics, genre seasons, retrospectives or themed events, this new club is for you.”

However, he stressed that the new organisation would not be competing with the well-established Louth Film Club, saying: “We are offering something different.”

The Louth Cine Circle aims to meet regularly at the Playhouse Cinema on Cannon Street in Louth, with breaks for the summer and Christmas periods. Anyone seeking more information should contact Jim at [email protected]

Meanwhile, Louth Film Club, which is also based at the Playhouse, continues to thrive. After attracting a bumper turnout of 104 for its first screening of 2026, there were even more at the second one last week. A record-breaking 130 attended to see the French film, ‘Holy Cow’.

Its programme for the year will go on to include 21 films from a wide range of countries, including India, Tunisia, Germany, Italy, Brazil, the USA and North Macedonia, as well as the UK – together with three ‘mystery slots’, allowing for late entries.

As in previous years, the club will also present a prize to the best short film produced by students at the University of Lincoln – and that winning film will be shown in July at a special screening for club members at the university.
