In 1914, she became Colonel in Chief of the Women’s Volunteer Reserve, recruiting women drivers and mechanics for the war effort.

Living at Mount Stewart, she created the gardens, regarded as one of the best in Britain, now in the hands of the National Trust.

The group’s next meeting is in WI House, Banks Street, on Wednesday, May 25, at 7.30pm, when Mick Rawle will give a talk on Enclosure and the Village Labourer. Admission is free.

The group will have a stand at the Woodhall Spa Country Show, when members will be on hand to give advice on family history.
