North Kelsey WI stepped back in time as they welcomed a Roman centurion to their September meeting.

David Marsden, in authentic dress, told the WI members and their many visitors about the clothing, weapons and life of a Roman soldier.

As a centurion – in charge of 80 men, not 100 as many believe – his life was a little more comfortable, but David also explained how other ranks would be treated.

The competition for a picture of a man in military uniform was won by Bridgett Clark, with a picture of her father in his Home Guard uniform.

Catherine Davis was the winner of the flower of the month competition, with a cleome, or spider flower.

For the next meeting, on October 12, there is a change of speaker. Elaine Honey will now be giving a hands-on sugar craft demonstration and the competition will be for a decorated cup cake – made on the night.

Meetings are held in the community hall on the second Wednesday of the month, starting at 7.15pm, and new members and visitors are always welcome.
