Notts: Victoria Wood’s Acorn Antiques coming to Nottingham Arts Theatre

Victoria Wood’s brilliant comedy Acorn Antiques is coming to the Arts Theatre in Nottingham this summer.

A tale of love, memory loss, old fashioned England and macaroons, Acorn Antiques was a huge hit in the West End where it starred the likes of Victoria Wood herself, Julie Walters, Celia Imrie and Neil Morrissey.

And now it will be performed in Nottingham from June 10-14 by Loughborough-based theatre company Greasepaint Productions.

“We have several members of our company who are from Nottingham and Nottinghamshire but this will be the first time we have performed in the city itself and we re really looking forward to it,” said a group spokesman.

“Acorn Antiques is such a brilliant show and the Arts Theatre seemed the perfect choice of venue for us to go to.”

“They are really keen to have us there and we are really looking forward to coming and performing for Notts audiences for the first time.”

Set in an antiques shop in the fictional town of Manchesterford, Acorn Antiques is packed full of the sort of humour that has made Victoria Wood such a household name – quintessentially British and yet an unnervingly accurate reflection of modern life.

Acorn Antiques, run by Mr Clifford, Miss Berta and Mr Clifford, is facing closure after the Countess of Manchesterford suddenly raises the previously peppercorn rent for the shop and all other shops on the street, leaving them all seemingly doomed to being turned into piercing studios, tanning salons and coffee shops.

Indeed, Acorn Antiques is squarely in the firing line for The Guilty Bean coffee shop chain, but salvation could lie in the form of Miss Babs and Miss Berta’s late father’s fortune.

To get their hands on the cash though they must solve some tricky problems, not least of which is finding a third sister they never knew about.

Can they beat the deadline set by loan shark Tony and does Mrs Overall know more about their family history than they thought?

As well as the sparkling script, there is plenty of humour in the score with songs like Acorn Antiques, Manchesterford, Oh, Oh Mrs O, Have You Met Miss Babs? Tip Top Tap and Clifford’s Anthem.

Performances are at 7.30pm each night, plus a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are available from company members, the box office on 0115 9476096 or online at www.nottingham-theatre.co.uk
