Sheffield: Hometown boy Richard Hawley has the Arena throbbing with pride

Sheffield was serenaded by its own bequiffed balladeer Richard Hawley at the Arena.

Clad in trademark double denim, it felt like the whole city had come out to welcome its hometown boy.

The venue throbbed with pride from the first note of mellow opener Which Way, from his new album Hollow Meadows.

Jubilance lifted further with Tonight The Streets Are Ours, a crowd pleaser from 2007 album Lady’s Bridge.

Then things got loud. Blistering gusts of guitar surged all around during Standing At The Sky’s Edge, the title track from his 2012 album.

And so the set continued to sway between the tender moments of Hawley’s treacly tone, crowd-pleasing crooner classics and downright dirty rock riffs which left ears ringing for days afterwards.

To coin the singer’s own catchphrase, this night was ‘double reyt’.
