The company was formed in 1988 by the late Russian choreographer Victor Smirnov-Golovanov.

A highly acclaimed ex soloist of the Bolshoi Ballet, Smirnov-Golovanov was committed to bringing his heritage of classical ballet in the Moscow style to audiences all over the world.

MCB first toured the UK in the 90s, under the promotion of Victor and Lilian Hochhauser, who have been closely associated with Russian artistes for over 50 years and continue to present the Bolshoi and Kirov Ballets summer seasons at the Royal Opera House.

Moscow City Ballet’s distinctive style endures both in production and rehearsal, and is due to the dedication of Smirnov-Golovanov’s widow Ludmila Nerubashenko, who has been leading the company for the last few years and this year takes the position of artistic director.

Since their formation, Moscow City Ballet has become one of Russia’s most successful and extensively touring ballet companies.

They have visited Korea, Japan, Taiwan, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Dubai, Israel, Cyprus and Greece. Annually, they play arenas in Poland with their magical Nutcracker, and enjoy great popularity in Moscow.
