Play on women's rights pioneer heads to Boston

Award-winning playwright Non Vaughan-O'Hagan and Eastenders actress Francesca Anderson star in acclaimed two-hander Across the Square at Blackfriars Theatre and Arts Centre in Boston later this month.

Non's play, which sold-out at West End's Jermyn Street Theatre, centres on a fictional encounter between polar opposites, suffragist Dame Millicent Fawcett, who was the first woman to be commemorated with a statue in Parliament Square, and socialite Lady Ottoline Morrell at Gower Street in Bloomsbury.

"Audiences to Across the Square can expect an intriguing evening full of fun and drama," says Non, who takes the role of Ottoline. "Imagine being able to eavesdrop on a conversation between two key figures whose names may not necessarily be familiar but whose influence on British politics and culture is enormous.

"Set on a cold December day in 1917, Lady Ottoline Morrell has crossed Bedford Square to the home of Dame Millicent Fawcett to express her condolences for the loss of a beloved sister. As the patroness of the Bloomsbury Group, Ottoline's vast circle of friends includes prime ministers, novelists, painters and philosophers whilst Millicent has dedicated her life to the crusade for women's suffrage."

Dame Millicent, who was born in Suffolk in 1847, peacefully campaigned for women's right to vote. She was the first woman to address the Oxford Union. Her accomplishments included co-founding Cambridge-based Newnham College, acting as President of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies for 22 years and publishing three books including Political Economy for Beginners and her memoir What I Remember.

Bloomsbury set hostess and garden designer Lady Ottoline was born in Tunbridge Wells in 1873. She hosted the likes of Bertrand Russell, Virgina Woolf, D.H. Lawrence and T.S. Eliot at Bedford Square.

Non acted as a commentator for the BBC for The Queen's funeral and has appeared in Eastenders, Grange Hill and Pobol y Cwm, while Francesca, who plays Millicent, has appeared in Eastenders and a stage production of A Christmas Carol where she worked with Doctor Who actors Peter Purves and Colin Baker.

Across the Square takes place at Blackfriars Theatre and Arts Centre on September 29. More details are at acrossthesquare.co.uk
