Thurcroft: Review Double Barrel Real Steakhouse and Grill

I have to confess that I am not the biggest fan of steak.

My partner has on many occasions cooked up a succulent piece of steak, it being one of his favourite meals, but I have simply not enjoyed it.

Therefore it was with some apprehension that I decided to review the Double Barrel Real Steakhouse and Grill in Thurcroft.

I’d seen the 72oz rump challenge which the restaurant offers, and thought that anywhere which offers this amount of meat on a plate would be somewhere he’d like.

The challenge offers diners, or competitors, the chance to get their £49.99 meal for free if they can eat it.

The monster challenge includes a 72oz rump steak, tomatoes, mushrooms, onion rings, chips and vegetables.

My partner was delighted when we walked into the restaurant and he saw the menu.

The Double Barrell venue has been completely refurbished and opened its doors as a steakhouse and grill last October.

It prides itself serving quality locally served produced.

Straight away the steaks caught the eye of my partner. He could choose from ribeye, sirloin and rump in 8oz, 12oz, 16oz, 24oz, 32oz and 48oz, with prices ranging from £12.95 to £36.95.

Diners can also opt to cook their steak themselves to their liking on a volcanic rock.

My partner ordered the 24oz sirloin, cooked medium (£24.50), which came with chips and salad.

I on the other hand was delighted to see other meats on the menu along with fish and vegetable dishes.

I decided that as I was in a steakhouse I should at least try some steak, so ordered the surf, turf and cluck (£15.95), with a side of garlic mushroom sauce (£1.85).

At least if I didn’t enjoy the steak, I would still have the chicken breast and battered king prawns, which I’d chosen instead of battered scampi.

The menu warns that meals could take up to 45-60 minutes to arrive during busy periods, but as there was only a couple of tables occupied it only took around 25 minutes for our food to come.

My partner’s steak was huge, around 10inch long and more than two inches thick. His eyes lit up as his plate was put infront of him with a generous helping of homemade chips and salad.

Not to my surprise he didn’t touch the salad but devoured the steak and chips.

He said the steak was the best by far that he’d ever had and was easy to cut and melted in his mouth.

What was to my surprise was how much I enjoyed by steak, which came medium well, as ordered.

It was delicious, full of flavour and melted on my tongue. I could never cook it like that at home!

The chicken was equally well cooked and the five huge king prawns were delicious in homemade batter which ballooned around them.

I ordered mine with a jacket potato, which was equally as well cooked - fluffy on the inside with a crispy skin - and a salad which was full on varieties of lettuce, peppers, red onions, tomato and cucumber.

The sauce was thick, creamy and flavoursome with a generous helping of mushrooms.

The only downside was there was simply too much and must to my annoyance I couldn’t finish it. I hate wasting good food.

My partner however cleared his plate and left speculating whether he could eat a bigger steak next time on our guaranteed return.

I left having being converted into a steak lover!
