Tickhill: Trio bring winter concert season to a satisfying and enjoyable end

The music began with a pleasant Shepherd’s Song by Karl Doppler (not to be confused with C.J. Doppler the physicist).
The delightful ‘Dolly Suite’ by Fauré, originally for piano duet, was here presented in a sensitive arrangement, starting with a limpid Berceuse and ending with a boisterous finale.

The first half ended with another shepherd, this time ‘on the rock’ in Schubert’s tuneful setting.
The second half was an interestingly varied selection of works,
It began with a sprightly setting of Shakespeare’s ‘Lo, Here the gentle lark’ (should that be ‘Hear’?) and ended with a canine collection called ‘The Dog Chronicles’ by an American lady.
In between, the highlight was perhaps the Trio by Howard Blake, with its rippling Allegro and lyrical Waltz.

The Sterling Trio was nicely balanced with excellent performers.
In particular the piano of Lauren Hibberd provided a solid foundation for the other players.
Altogether this was an agreeable and satisfying concert, rounding off a most successful season in fine style.
