Toll of War remembered at Epworth events

Commemorations of the centenary of WW1 took place last weekend to remember the 52 men from Epworth who died during the conflict.

Bob Fish, chairman of Epworth Town Council, has gathered his research on the soldiers in a memorial book, called Toll of War.

He said: “The memorial book was blessed in St Andrew’s Church and now has a permanent home there. The service of dedication was very poignant and reflective.”

Displayed in a hand-carved cabinet by local craftsman Ian Till, the book was produced thanks to a £680 grant cash from the Heritage Lottery.

The grant also allowed the production of a memorial plaque to Epworth’s fallen, which was unveiled on Saturday August 2 at Thurlow pavilion.

In addition, shops throughout the town displayed individual tributes to the 52 soldiers in their windows, using photographs where possible and including personal detail of their life stories.

The series of events for the centenary of WW1 in Epworth, began on Friday, August 1, with the lighting of a beacon.

Councillor Fish said: “There were 50 or so people at the lighting of the Epworth Beacon - it provided a powerful signal to the weekend’s events.”

The town council chairman was thanked officially for his painstaking work in producing the commemorative book at this week’s Epworth Town Council meeting, by Coun Jean Levesley on behalf of everyone.
