WIN! Chance to see wildlife at Yorks park

The first two lines of AA Milne’s poem At The Zoo could have been written about Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

One of the area’s newest attractions provides an excellent day out for all ages, particularly during the long school holidays – and we have three family tickets to be won!

The park in Doncaster brings the kind of wildlife we would normally only see in books right to our doorstep.

Along with the lions, tigers and camels there are a host of other animals from around the world, some of which, like the wallabies, you can get close enough to stroke.

The South America Viva enclosure is the brand new addition to the park, opened earlier this month by Coronation Street’s Tracy Barlow, actress Kate Ford.

This section is home to a selection of endangered animals from the Amazon forest including capybara, mara, agouti, rhea and squirrel monkeys.

Tigers are also an endangered species and park staff are hoping to breed from the male and female Siberian tigers which arrived earlier this year.

The lions which live in the African Plains enclosure, complete with waterfall and rocks to climb on, were rescued from a Romanian zoo last year following a big fundraising campaign.

The animals had been living in tiny cages but are now able to roam on grass.

Information boards give visitors information about the individual lions which all have names and distinctive characteristics.

One of the great things about the park, particularly for children, is the chance to get up close to many of the animals.

A walk through the lemur woods brings you face to face with these lively creatures clearly enjoying themselves climbing through the trees.

While it is possible to stroke wallabies, goats and sheep in their enclosures.

We also listened to one of the staff talks, called animals up close, which gave us the chance to see a parrot, bearded dragon, snakes and ferrets.

There is also an excellent adventure playground in the woods, another outdoor play and picnic area and some fun indoor slides.
