Questions were asked about the future of Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena when a new rival venue opened last year up the road in Leeds.

But another bumper year this year at the Sheffield venue and exclusive Yorkshire events next year - including One Direction, Take That and Top Gear - have answered the doubters. There’s room for both venues, competition is healthy and arena-goers are the real winners.

The Motorpoint, which can hold 3,000 to over 13,600 - making it the biggest venue in the county - continues to host a wide range of events from major concerts to comedy, sport to theatre, family shows to exhibitions and conferences..

Motorpoint Arena General Manager Rob O’Shea said: “2014 has been a good year for us in terms of touring shows and we are now looking forward to an even more successful 2015.

“With a massive variety of shows already on sale, some of which have already sold out, it’s looking set to be a strong 12 months ahead.

“The venue’s first event next year, as it has been for the past 20 years, is the Indoor Bike Trials with Sheffield hosting the only UK leg of this World series. Closely followed in February by ArenaCross, where the Arena is transformed into an indoor motorbike dirt track with over 4000 tons of dirt laid on the Arena floor.

“There are already sell out multiple dates from the biggest touring artistes Take That, One Direction and Olly Murs.

“With family shows from the World’s most famous basketball team the Harlem Globetrotters, ice hockey from The Steelers, wrestling from WWE, and pre-school fun with CBeebies Live! 2015 is also shaping up to be yet another strong year for us with comedy shows, including two dates for Michael McIntyre and six performances of a brand new Mrs Brown tour.

“Many more shows will be added over the coming months.”

The Arena played host to some of the world’s biggest stars, shows and sporting battles in its 23rd year, including Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, McBusted, Katy Perry, Little Mix, Lee Evans, Paolo Nutini, Gary Barlow, Lee Evans, Ant and Dec and Kasabian. Miranda Hart was the first female comedian to play there and Jack Whitehall was the first to perform comedy ‘in the round’.

It staged its first Sheffield Film and Comic Con, with thousands of visitors flocking to see their heroes including stars from Star Wars, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Game of Thrones, Red Dwarf, Battlestar Galactica, Harry Potter, Wizards Vs Aliens, The A-Team and more. The event proved to be so popular that it will be back on August 15 and 16.

Another first was when The Spanish Riding School of Vienna brought their famous Lipizzaner Stallions for their first appearance in the North of England in its 430 year history.

Disney On Ice, the only touring show to have played the venue every year since the building opened in May 1991, returned to mark over 270 performances, seen by over 1.3 million customers at the venue.

The Arena is operated by Sheffield International Venues (SIV), one of the largest sport, leisure and entertainment companies in the North of England, is managed by Live Nation Entertainment, comprised of Ticketmaster.com, Live Nation Concerts, Front Line Management Group and Live Nation Network.
