At the June meeting, the speaker was Denise Taylor, who spoke about the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Denise explained the difference a hearing dog can make to deaf people, who often feel isolated by their disability.

This was confirmed by Denise’s friend, John, who accompanied her and who is deaf.

He took along Poppy, his hearing dog, and explained what a difference she had made to his life, not only by alerting him to sounds such as the doorbell or telephone, but also by the companionship she gives him.

Members were impressed by Poppy’s good behaviour and friendliness.

WI member Patricia Duke-Cox had attended a patrons’ lunch celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday held in The Mall.

Members were thrilled to hear she had met and chatted to Prince Harry and had been interviewed for BBC television.
