Young cellists go in Deep...

CELLO players from Gainsborough will travel to Hull on Saturday 17th March to feature in a remarkable piece of new music.

The Lincolnshire Youth Cello Ensemble will play in the premiere of Sounding The Deep at the city’s landmark aquarium the Deep.

Contemporary composer Nigel Morgan has written a 20 minute symphonic piece and separate compositions for six ‘shoals’ of young musicians.

His aim is to raise awareness of the fragility or the ocean through his music.

In an added strand to the composition, laptop musicians will capture deep-sea sounds from around the world

The performance will celebrate the Deep’s 10th anniversary and is part of the Cultural Olympiad.

As one of the shoals, the cello ensemble of more than 30 musicians aged from nine to 18, under musical director Glenis Malkin will play Never Day and Under Night.

Mrs Malkin, a professional cellist and teacher based at Moulton, near Spalding, said: “It has been something new to work with a living composer. We usually work closely with arrangers, but to have music specially written for us has been exciting.”

“We are always looking for new music to broaden our repertoire and opportunities to play. Everyone is very excited about the concert.”

Ensemble members come from as far afield as Market Deeping, near Peterborough, in the south of the county, to Gainsborough in the north, Grantham, Boston and Lincoln.

The concert is at Hull City Hall at 7pm on 17th March. Tickets from £7 to £12 (£1 for accompanied children on main floor) are available from the box office on 01482 300300.
