Batemans launch new beer to celebrate Magna Carta’s 800th anniversary

The county plays an important role in the story of the historic document and is home to one of only four surviving original copies.

Named Law of the Land and available by bottle, this 5.5% ABV beer has been brewed with sweet English barley and spicy Minstrel hops to give a balanced taste of history.

Batemans has partnered with Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) and East Lindsey District Council (ELDC) to officially create this new beer for the anniversary celebrations.

The beer was launched last night, Tuesday May 19, at an exclusive event held in the women’s prison at the newly renovated Lincoln Castle, where Lincoln Cathedral’s copy of the document is now housed in the new David PJ Ross Magna Carta Vault.

Stuart Bateman, Managing Director of Batemans Brewery, said: “We’re incredibly excited to have produced this limited edition bottle beer in partnership with LCC and ELDC as part of the Magna Carta celebrations.

“The beer is vibrant and gives a real sense of occasion – bursting with richness it is a very befitting tribute to the rebelliousness of the barons to which we owe so much.

“Magna Carta is a hugely important part of our history that still impacts us today, so what better way to mark this milestone than by raising a glass of Law of the Land beer.”

Councillor Colin Davie, Executive Councillor: Economic Development, Environment, Planning, Tourism for LCC, said: “What better partner for the newly revamped Lincoln Castle than the county’s top brewer? It’s great to see Batemans becoming involved with such an important celebration not just for Lincolnshire, but on a national level.”

Councillor Craig Leyland, representative for the ELDC, added: “We’re thrilled to have been involved in such an exciting project, and are sure the new beer will go down fantastically with local residents and the many tourists we will welcome to Lincolnshire are part of the celebrations.”

Law of the Land will be available to buy in 330ml bottles from the Batemans Visitor Centre and online store, as well as Lincoln Castle and Lincolnshire Co-op stores.
