Citizens Advice on National Living Wage

The branch of Citizens Advice that covers Sleaford has given its verdict on the new National Living Wage, sounding a note of caution.

This month saw the launch of the new National Living Wage. It means if you are working and aged 25 or over and not in the first year of an apprenticeship, you are entitled to at least £7.20 per hour.

Debra Lee, business development manager at Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire, said: “Even though the introduction of the living wage will only raise household incomes by less than one per cent on average, any additional money in families’ pockets will be a bonus.”

She said, however, ‘insecure work still needs to be addressed’, explaining: “Fluctuating work patterns such as agency jobs and zero hour contracts can make it difficult to pay essential bills and find suitable childcare.”

She added: “Some people who receive benefits might not even see a rise in their net income because as their wages increase, their benefits may also decrease.”

She also said it was important to notify relevant parties of changes in circumstances to avoid overpayments.
