Staying home because of Covid-19 provided the perfect opportunity for residents to have a big clear out - and bags of fashions and household goods . have been left at Oxfam in Lumley Road.

However, in spite of staff being delighted to receive the level and quality of donations since reopening, staff are struggling to sort it because many regular volunteers are still unable to go back to work due to health issues or caring duties.

Sue Ray, the shop's manager, said they are now appealing for volunteers to help them turn these potential treasures into vital funds for their life-saving work.

"To keep a shop running efficiently it would normally take 30 volunteers but with the number of returners currently at less than 50 percent we are looking to encourage new volunteers to give a little time to help us with the generous donations received from the community," she said.

“We are also appealing to young people to help fill this gap. As a result of the coronavirus, many people’s plans have been thrown into disarray.

"For instance, work experience placements may have been cancelled leaving teenagers at a loose end, so we are encouraging them to volunteer in their local Oxfam shop and learn life skills.”

Helping at Oxfam is not just about sorting and pricing, volunteers also help spot and research the value of items, create appealing shop and window displays and use social media and Oxfam’s on-line channels to get the best price for their donations.

As an Oxfam volunteer you would be joining thousands of volunteers who “won’t live with poverty”.

It’s a chance to learn about Oxfam’s humanitarian, development and campaigning work, to utilise and/or develop your administrative, customer service, leadership, HR, administration and social media skills. There are also opportunities to gain a nationally recognised NVQ qualification in customer service, warehousing or retail and management.

“We are also preparing for our Second Hand September campaign to raise awareness of the environmental impact of fashion,” added Sue.

“I have just celebrated 30 years of working at Oxfam in Skegness, 18 years as shop manager, and now, more than ever, I want to say 'thank you' to our hardworking volunteers and customers who have continued to support us by donating and shopping with us.

"I am extremely grateful for the volunteers who have already come back and adapted to the new volunteering regimes and I hope to welcome some new faces very soon!”

Anyone from the age of 14 is welcome to apply to volunteer with Oxfam. NVQs are available to volunteers aged 19 plus matching the criteria.
