Clare Bailey – also known as The Retail Champion – is a well-known and respected retail expert in the UK.

Clare, who is based in Sleaford, has just been appointed by Boston Borough Council and will be looking to contact businesses remotely to introduce herself, then following up with those that are interested in receiving tailored advice, including: how to access financial support, training, development of digital skills, ways to diversify, and how to build consumer confidence.

The project is part of the council’s work to support the safe re-opening of the high streets through funding from the European Regional Development Fund and Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Clare said: “As an independent business consultant, engaged by Boston Borough Council to support local, independent, businesses across the area I am looking forward to making a tangible difference. I am here to help in any way I can, supporting businesses recover from the economic impact of Covid.

“I am looking forward to talking to businesses, and seeking ways to build resilience, diversify, and transform for a different future, as we all focus on the safe reopening of our high streets, towns and village centres.”

Coun Nigel Welton, portfolio holder for economic development, said: “This project will make a real difference to supporting existing local independent businesses in offering specific tailored advice to each business and their needs in our borough.

“Given the pressures the business community are facing from Covid-19, we hope this investment will make a real difference to safeguarding and protecting our local businesses, and in delivering what they need to be able to move forward.”

The appointment comes after Clare was taken on in December by West Lindsey District Council to help businesses to navigate their way through the current situation and to help ensure they are recovery-ready.

After an online session around “10-steps to retail success”, she is planning to deliver four additional one-hour webinars and workshops to support businesses in West Lindsey with a wealth of take-away resources on subjects such as ecommerce, social media, attractive store fronts, marketing and promotions.

A North Kesteven District Council spokesman said they too have had an independent business adviser for some time, Phil Means. His work is also part-funded by the government in its effort to kick-start the high street again after Covid.

Phil and the BusinessNK team can provide support in lots of ways for new, fledgling and established enterprises; including guidance on applying for available grants and funding, start-up advice and business planning, marketing and more.
