Get a preview of Sleaford's new heritage trail

The district council commissioned the When in Sleaford trail through artsNK in partnership with William Alvey School, with funding coming from Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant, the Royal British Legion and The Johnson and Mukherjee Brothers Charitable Trust.

ArtsNK worked with artist David Mackie to develop the series of cast bronze roundels inspired by Sleaford’s heritage.

The artworks, which are going to be installed in pavements and walls around Sleaford, will act as way-markers through and around the town, informing residents and visitors about existing public artworks, historical sites and places to visit, including The National Centre for Craft and Design, Sleaford Museum, Navigation House and Cogglesford Mill.

As well as an opportunity to see all 18 roundels together in one place, the exhibition at Navigation House, off Carre Street (from September 24 to October 14), will also include drawings, prints and other work by local school children and residents, which helped generate the final designs - and the inspiration behind each of the roundels.

Mr Mackie enjoyed working with school pupils and residents delving into the history of the town. He said: “I hope the input they had into the finished designs will demonstrate the value of their involvement and give them joy and pride in their local environment. We had some really talented budding artists working on this project. I’m looking forward to seeing the plaques in situ.”

David Mackie has also worked with William Alvey School on Project 72, to create a special artwork to commemorate the 72 local young men from the school who died in the First World War.
