Visitors to a Natureland in Skegness will have to wait a little longer as there is still no date set for the re-opening to the public of the seal sanctuary.

As Covid-19 restrictions are eased, directors have been in touch with the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for clarification on when the attraction can welcome its customers back.

Natureland has had a tough couple of months - launching an appeal for £25,000 as it relies on the generous support of its supporters to survive.

It costs around £2,000 to look after each seal pup for the duration of their care.

However, most of the staff at Natureland were furloughed and the sanctuary did not qualify for a government grant to help it through the period it has been closed.

"The management is family, so we have been able to carry on working with three animal carers," said director Matthew Yeadon.

"Fortunately, after one of our busiest season yet rescuing 69 baby seals, we have had a quiet period.

"We have been able to release some seals back into the wild and have caught up with some maintenance work that otherwise would have been costly.

"Until we re-open we are relying heavily on the support of the public via our JustGiving page and Amazon wish list and we are extremely grateful to everyone who has helped us."

To keep the public informed on how the animals are doing, Natureland has been holding live videos on Facebook and Instagram, including clips of the seals answering questions from members of the public.

The moment seal pups were released back into the wild was also shared on social media - as well as rabbits and guinea pigs enjoying treats donated from the Amazon wishlist.

Natureland is also appealing for support for a Government petition calling for zoos and sanctuaries to be provided financial help.
