Care home supports resident to publish poetry book

A care home in Spalding celebrated World Book Day with the official launch of resident, Stephen Atkins’ first book, Soothing Minds.
Father-of-two, Stephen, 54, moved into Cedar Falls care home in 2023. He lives independently in one of the home’s bungalow-style facilities, while enjoying the reassurance of a supportive community around him.
Since childhood, Stephen has written poetry as a way of processing his thoughts and emotions. His poems, which are inspired by nature, life and loneliness, reflect his personal experiences of mental health and have long served as a coping mechanism.
Recognising his passion for poetry, staff at Cedar Falls encouraged Stephen to compile his words into a book. With their support, 50 copies of Soothing Minds were printed, with contributions from fellow residents and team members adding to the poetry publication.

The official launch took place on World Book Day (5thMarch), with staff, residents and members of the local community dressing up for the occasion and enjoying live entertainment from Rock Choir Spalding. Guests who attended got the chance to meet Stephen, purchase copies and celebrate his achievement.
Speaking about the launch, Stephen Atkins said, “I feel incredibly proud and happy. It means a great deal to me being able to share my poems with others, whilst being able to raise awareness of mental health concerns. The book is for anyone struggling with their mental health and I hope my words help people feel less alone.”
Proceeds from the book will go towards the Cedar Falls Residents’ Fund, helping to enhance activities and experiences for those living at the home. A percentage will also be donated to Shine Lincolnshire, a local mental health charity that believes strong local connections are key to improving mental health and wellbeing.
Head of regulatory support at Cedar Falls, Adele Gavaghan added, “We are absolutely delighted to support Stephen’s passion for poems and to see his dream of publishing a book become a reality.

“Poetry has been such an important outlet for him, and this project has brought our whole community together. Watching him sign copies on World Book Day was a truly special moment for everyone at Cedar Falls.”
