Council approves £190,000 refurbishment to make public toilets in Caistor, Market Rasen and Gainsborough 'fit for the future'
West Lindsey District Council has approved plans for a £190,000 refurbishment of ageing public toilet facilities in Caistor, Market Rasen and Gainsborough.
The council says the improvements will help to provide cleaner, safer and more accessible facilities for residents, visitors and local businesses.
The investment will support full refurbishment works at: North Street, Caistor; John Street, Market Rasen; and Roseway, Gainsborough.
The works are expected to include renewed flooring, improved ventilation, upgraded lighting, replacement sanitaryware, enhanced accessibility features and more robust fixtures designed to reduce future maintenance and improve the user experience.

The decision follows a report to the Thriving Council Committee, setting out the condition of the three facilities. It highlighted the need for significant refurbishment due to ageing infrastructure, declining accessibility standards and increasing maintenance issues. The report recommended full refurbishment, offering the best long-term value and extending the life of the assets by an estimated 15 to 20 years.
The scheme will be funded through the Maintenance of Facilities Reserve, with £190,000 requested to deliver the full programme during the 2026/27 financial year.
Coun Owen Bierley, chairman of the Thriving Council Committee welcomed the news.
He said: “Public toilets are an important part of thriving town centres. They support residents, visitors, families, older people and people with accessibility needs, while also contributing to public health and confidence in our public spaces. This refurbishment programme will help ensure our facilities are modern, reliable and fit for the future.”
The council will also engage with the town councils in Caistor, Market Rasen and Gainsborough to explore whether they wish to transfer ownership of the community assets community once the improvement works have been completed.
Temporary facilities will be provided where needed to help minimise disruption while the refurbishment works are carried out.
Further information, including timescales and any temporary arrangements, will be shared with residents and businesses once the delivery programme has been confirmed.
More information about the public toilets, owned by the council, including opening times, can be found on the West Lindsey District Council website.
