Full steam ahead for new railway book

"They're flying out of the boxes!"
That was the reaction of volunteers from the Horncastle History & Heritage Society last Wednesday as they launched their latest book.
“The Railway that Horncastle Built”, by Society member Chris Bates, tells the history of the town’s branch line railway - and more.
As Chris explains: “The railway was paid for and promoted by local people, and it served Horncastle for over a hundred years.
“It was much missed when it finally closed in 1971, so a few years ago we ran an exhibition about the line and the people who ran it.
“So many people came up to us with memories and stories that we decided a book was needed to preserve these accounts for the future.
“From the mystery of Horncastle’s buried train, to the day an engine hit Martin bridge – it’s all in there. Even the parts of the station that have survived.”
Society chairman Adam Cartwright said: “We’re so pleased with how the book is selling. The queue for Chris’s signature stretched along the hall at one point.”
He added: “We think Chris’s account is a great read. What’s more, many of the colour and black and white photos have never been published before.
“Whilst it’s really nice to revive memories of the line, it’s just as important to tell its story for people now and future generations.
“We’re hugely grateful to everyone who helped us put the book together, especially the Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway and the Great Northern Railway Society.”
