Gainsborough Sea Scouts Offshore Venture

A Group of Scouts and Explorers from the 6th Gainsborough Sea Scouts took to the seas for a weekend with Adventures Offshore to try their hands at sailing a Yacht.
Under the instruction of their patient Skipper & First Mate, the group of youths tried their hands at all aspects of being afloat, from helming, managing sails, ‘man overboard drills’ and navigating to preparing, cooking & eating meals afloat!
Once shown how a vessel’s progress is logged, the Scouts and Explorers took the initiative, set their own hourly reminders and worked together to demonstrate the knowledge that they had acquired, to record the yacht’s voyage.
Sailing and living in close quarters on the boat for a prolonged period of time really helps build team and social skills and participants forget the pull of electronic devices as they concentrate on the tasks in hand.

This group of 8 young people had an experience of sailing out to the coast, sleeping at anchor in a river, cooking meals on a moving vessel and learning so much about sailing, navigation, working together and importantly about themselves. This is an experience that will stay with them forever.
If you are aged 10-17 and would like similar opportunities - then get in touch at [email protected] to see what Scouting could offer you.
Could you help organise these and other adventurous activities for young people? We’d love to hear from you too so that you can join us or one of our fantastic groups located in Gainsborough and the surrounding area.
