IN PICTURES: First day of racing in men’s Tour of Britain puts spotlight on Lincolnshire

It was an exciting opening stage of the Lloyds Tour of Britain, with the men’s race starting and finishing in historic Lincoln – long established as a venue for cycling thanks to the Milk Race and the Lincoln Grand Prix.

Stage winner was British ride Lewis Askey after more than 180km of racing through the north of the county, taking in Market Rasen and Caistor on their way.

Spectators decorated homes and businesses and cheered on the riders as they whizzed through the streets and country lanes at amazing speeds.

Caistor put on a great show with numerous painted bicycles and banners on display thanks to a band of volunteers and supportive local business owners.

They finished with five circuits of Lincoln and five climbs of the famous Michaelgate, before the race came down to its final metres on Newport.

From the Lincolnshire Wolds to the streets of Lincoln, thousands of people came out to watch, cheer on the riders and be part of a fantastic day for the county.

The second stage is underway, heading off from Boston Market Place, taking in Revesby, Coningsby, Tattershall, Woodhall Spa, Wragby, Horncastle, Louth, Mablethorpe, Sutton On Sea, Spilsby and finishing in Skegness where a party awaits for supporters.
