Sleaford church poppy cascade is amazing community effort

A cascade of 8,000 hand made poppies now adorns St Denys’ Church in Sleaford as a reminder in the build-up to Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day in the town.

The display overlooking the Market Place hangs from the roof of the church and has been put together by community volunteers supporting the Sleaford and District Branch Royal British Legion under the banner of Sleaford Community Remembrance Poppy Display.

Branch vice-chairman, Lt Col (Retired) Julie Butler, said it was an expansion of last year’s project.

The poppy cascade is nearly 14 metres long and has over 8,000 handcrafted multi-media poppies.

The poppies have been crafted from wool, rubber, plastic bottles and even soft drink cans.

Julie said: “This has truly been a community event with many local community groups taking part. Several local knitting groups, the Sleaford Dementia Support group and individuals have made thousands of poppies at home. We have even had some poppies donated from Wales, West Yorkshire and Sussex.

"Local businesses have helped us with poppy collection points and hosted our poppy display construction days, during which volunteers from the community (including the Sleaford Trefoil Group) helped with attaching the 8,000 poppies to the nets and were treated to a friendly natter and coffee and cake.”

She felt it was something Sleaford should be very proud of: “I think you will agree it looks pretty good. We have already had a great response on the local Facebook sites.”
