Willow Wheeler won the prize after designing the side of a truck in a Road Haulage Association (RHA) competition, held to celebrate National Lorry Week.

She said: “Winning the competition feels great as there are lots of things we can buy for the school with this money. For example, we could purchase more outdoor play equipment such as: skipping ropes, hoola hoops and more equipment to play with outside during break times and PE lessons. Equipment for making a range of crafts and for baking – which is something I really love to do.

Willow’s design included a rainbow which she described as a ‘symbol of happiness’ and as something that ‘reminds people at the moment to stay positive and hopeful’.

Headteacher Graeme Wright said the school was ‘thrilled’ to find out Willow’s design had won, saying it was one of a number of ‘super entries’ from the school.

“We have a few families within our school that work within haulage companies, including Benton Brothers and Kime so we understand the key role that haulage plays in our local community and beyond,” he said. “In fact, it was Benton Brothers that kindly highlighted the competition to us and we were keen to get involved.”

With Covid-19 measures placing schools under increased financial pressure, he said the sum would make a ‘phenomenal difference’ to supporting the children.
