Isle MP at campaign anniversary

Isle MP Andrew Percy, who is a White Ribbon ambassador, spoke at the Westminster event that was attended by fellow MPs from all parties and campaigners.

About 1.2 million women in the UK are victims of domestic abuse each year. The White Ribbon Campaign UK urges men to actively speak out about male violence against women and to challenge the negative gender stereotypes that underpin abuse.

Over 70 public sector organisations have achieved White Ribbon status by following an approved action plan to engage men in the campaign. Along with many large organisations, the campaign also works with smaller concerns such as sports clubs, community groups and others.

Its successful ambassador programme supports men to take specific actions to challenge domestic abuse in their own communities.

The Government signed the Istanbul Convention in 2012, which calls for measures to be taken to prevent violence against women, to protect victims and to bring about prosecution of the perpetrators.

White Ribbon UK asks men to make a personal pledge, noting that while most men are not violent towards women, many will ignore the problem, or see it as nothing to do with them. The campaign asks that they should take a stand against violence now and sign never to commit, condone or remain silent about men’s violence against women.

Andrew spoke out at the recent anniversary event. He said: “I look forward to working with the White Ribbon Campaign and other organisations such as North Lincolnshire Council, and local schools and businesses to continue with this.

“White Ribbon Day and International End Violence against Women Day are on November 25, and I am sure residents will continue to get behind this campaign to help us send a clear and united message against violence.”
