A Louth area teenager has been celebrating after getting a top grade in his A Level Maths exam - despite being just 13 years old!

Jack Brown, who attends QEGS Alford, received his result on December 17, having sat the exam in October.

He had been due to sit the exam back in May, when he was just 12 years old, but this was cancelled due to Covid.

This meant that he had a few more months to prepare for the exam - but he was on his own rather than sitting and learning with sixth formers.

Thankfully he had support from his family, who helped him prepare revision plans and complete practice exam papers.

Jack previously achieved A* in his GCSE Maths, when he was just 10-years-old.

Despite these incredible academic achievements, his mum Andrea insists that he is otherwise just a normal teenager.

Andrea said: “Jack is just a normal teenage boy. Goofy, loves gaming, and his bedroom is horrendous. On a normal day, he doesn’t do any more than other kids.

“He always has the choice to sit the exam or not. His headmaster even said if he changed his mind on the morning he could withdraw. This takes so much pressure off him. He’s just giving it a go and if he does well great. If not, nothing to lose and he’ll learn from the experience.

“I am most proud of his behaviour on the run up to the exam. He’s never revised for an A Level before. We had no idea what to do so we just made it up.

“I’m terrible at maths, so my job was just keeping track of scores on a spreadsheet, feeding him, and being his cheerleader.

“It’s really hard to keep being enthusiastic and motivated doing the same thing over and over, but he did it.

“(QEGS Alford’s) head master Mr Thompson, and Head of Gifted and Talented, Mr Claxton, both supported Jack by encouraging his learning and curiosity beyond Maths into subjects like History and DT.”

Andrea continued: “Jack got a new phone as his reward (for passing his A Level Maths) and has spent the day like many 13 year olds, doing his favourite pastime - dossing and gaming! He’s earned it!

“Jack says he’s not in any rush to go to university early and will concentrate on his other subjects over the next few years, knowing he already has one A Level and three GCSEs under his belt. He hopes to go to Cambridge or MIT and become an Investment Banker.

“While there is a lot of talk about how far behind students are, there was also an opportunity to get ahead.

“Jack has really demonstrated what can be achieved with some self discipline, motivation and sacrificing a few hours less of gaming.

Jack said: “I love visiting Australia and would love to go for longer and learn how to surf before university.

“Maybe volunteer teaching maths in the day and then surf - that would be great!”
