More than 800 pupils take part in School Games activities across West Lindsey

West Lindsey District Council has supported more than 800 pupils over the last year to take part in school sport.

Funded by Sport England, the School Games programme aims to give every young person the chance to enjoy inclusive and accessible sport, regardless of ability.

Between April 2025 and December 2025, 887 pupils from 12 schools in just one part of the district took part in events delivered across the district. Five sports were represented during the year including rugby, cricket and netball. The primary events were all supported by 87 Young Leaders from four secondary schools, all of whom completed training workshops to prepare them for the role.

Coun Moira Westley, Deputy Leader of West Lindsey District Council, said: “It is fantastic to see Hannah deliver such a wide range of activity across the district. Physical activity gives so many benefits to young people, so it is great that nearly 900 pupils were able to take part in School Games last year.

"We all know the physical and emotional benefits that an active lifestyle brings, as well as the positive effect it can have on focus in the classroom.”

In addition, 27 pupils from Charles Baines Primary School took part in the School Games Morning Movement Pilot in partnership with Gainsborough Trinity Foundation.

The pilot involves short, structured movement sessions before lessons begin, designed to improve class cohesion, pupil focus and readiness to learn. The project has continued to run into the spring term and is already having a positive impact.

Hannah Lane, Communities Officer for Sports and Physical Activity at West Lindsey District Council, plays a key role in co-ordinating the programme working closely with local, county and regional partners. She oversees one of the eight areas within Lincolnshire.

Hannah said: “I have really enjoyed visiting different schools and working with young people with varied levels of experience in sport. I have a passion to make sport inclusive, fun and accessible to everyone. By bringing schools, clubs, charities and national governing bodies together we can collectively give so many young people positive experiences through sport and physical activity.£
