Pupils learn a lot at school's safety day

Pupils have been clued up on safety matters during a range of hands-on activities.

The now annual Safety Day at Cranwell Primary School offered children a chance to gain plenty of knowledge and tips about keeping themselves and others safe in their day to day lives and in case of emergency.

Sessions were offered on a round-robin basis in classrooms and areas around the school, with the year groups taking turns at each experience.

Some sessions were offered by staff on subjects such as e-safety and avoiding strangers, and others were laid on by invited guests and organisations such as fire safety guidance by firefighter Matt Harris of Serco’s fire service at RAF Cranwell, who also let pupils handle the fire extinguishers.

Emergency first aid, including bandaging and rescusitation, was offered by RAF medics and road safety advice, especially around lorries, was offered by a team from Gist haulage company - complete with a truck in the playground.

Laszlo Bartalis and Dave Elsey from Gist’s national road safety programme demonstrated how a whole class of children could be hidden in the blindspots of a lorry driver’s vision.

There were also local emergency medic response cars outside the school that children could climb inside, trying the flashing lights and kit for size, and getting hands on.

Youngsters also joined in a Big Breakfast at the start of the school day in the hall. At a cost of £1 per person, all profits went to the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. Pupils also filled an outline of a helicopter with coins.

The school has been fundraising over the last year and the event’s joint organisers Fiona Birchenall and Steph Petitt presented £1,600 to the air amubulance charity’s community fundraiser Faye Nam during the event.

All pupils enjoyed the experience which is aimed at refreshing and boosting the knowledge of pupils in each school year.
