School creates video about Navenby heritage attraction

Last year, North Kesteven District Council successfully secured money from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help bring of Mrs Smith’s Cottage in Navenby back into use after it was discovered it needed structural repairs to the roof.

It is anticipated that the restoration will continue for the next three years, with a re-opening in 2019.

Keen to ensure community participation in the project, North Kesteven District Council enlisted the help of North Kesteven School of North Hykeham to create a video of the Friends of Mrs Smith’s Cottage, sharing their memories of Mrs Smith, the cottage and volunteering at the tourist attraction.

Four Year 10 students have been working with Pete Fletcher, Head of the Media Department at the school, to edit the footage ready for it to be used within the project and for consultations taking place throughout the development stage.

Mr Fletcher said: “I am delighted that we have been given the opportunity to work with NKDC and the local community.

“The students have enjoyed undertaking research into the life of Mrs Smith and have produced some complex video production techniques. We are looking forward to producing more footage as the renovation project continues.”

Coun Marion Brighton, Leader of NKDC, said: “We are really grateful to NK School for creating this video of Mrs Smith and the cottage and it is wonderful that they have become a part of this renovation project.

“I look forward to seeing the video they have made. I am sure it will be fantastic and I know it will be used a great deal throughout the restoration and in the years to come.”

Anyone wanting to find out more about the restoration of Mrs Smith’s Cottage is invited to attend a drop-in session at NKDC’s Navenby office, in North Lane, from 10am to noon on Wednesday, March 15.

It is free for anyone to pop along and find out about the project, look at information on what is happening, get involved in future volunteering, give their opinions and share any memories of the cottage and Mrs Smith.

Tea and coffee will be available and those working on the project will be available to answer questions and gathering research as part of their consultations.
