Stickney students commemorate the Somme with a special concert

From Stickney to the Somme was part of the Royal British Legion’s Somme 100 events programme, with scenes, stories and songs interspersed with footage telling the story of World War One, from Kitchener’s call to join up, through the Battle of the Somme to eventual victory in November 1918.

They saw how war affected both the soldiers in the trenches and families at home through the reading of real letters from the period and through the eyes of Violet – a (fictitious) young girl whose dad was conscripted and lost his life on the first day of The Somme.

The skilful blending of all these vividly brought home the sense of duty, comradeship, sacrifice and loss on both a local and national level.

Rousing choruses, emotion filled acting and beautifully read poems all played their part in this excellent production.

An appreciative audience were totally absorbed as each scene and song flowed seamlessly into the next part of the story telling.

A poignant and fitting end to the evening was the cast reading a roll of honour of the Stickney men who died in the war.

Special guest at the event was Fred Hunt who led The Exhortation, which was followed by the Last Post.

A very moving and memorable evening.

Proceeds from ticket sales and donations for refreshments amounted to £357.13, which was donated to the Coningsby and Tattershall branch of the Royal British Legion.

President Brian Willis went along to collect the cheque and speak to the cast and said how much he and his wife had enjoyed the show.

He also spoke to the students about the work of the British Legion and the type of things the donation would be able to help support.

He also presented everyone involved with commemorative Royal British Legion lapel pins.
