They can certainly do their sums at Wrawby

Parents and grandparents added to the supportive atmosphere as 64 pupils from Years 3 to 6 took part in the now annual event at The Vale Academy in Brigg.

Organiser Jayne Keeler said the aim was to provide a mathematical challenge for local primary schools.

“We want to show them from an early age maths can be fun and interesting,” she said.

“The highlight was seeing the concentration on all the pupils’ faces. It was an electric atmosphere when the winners were announced.”

This year’s winners were Wrawby Church of England Primary School.

Other primaries attending were Hibaldstow, Scawby, St Mary’s, Barnetby, Brigg, Worlaby and Kirmington.

Maths A-level sixth formers were scorers at the event.

Robbie Hall (17) said: “It was so encouraging to see so many pupils enthusiastic for the maths challenge.

“I would have loved to have had an opportunity like that when I was younger.”

Kacie Rickells (16) agreed.

“The team spirit was amazing. It was great to see so much enthusiasm.”

Vale Academy principal Nicola Williams described the event as “fantastic.”

“It allows a real community spirit between primary schools,” she said.

“It also promotes numeracy which is so vital in education. Thank you to the maths department for organising it, the students for their help and the primary schools for supporting it.”
