It’s been an exciting term at Hexthorpe Primary School, with a number of special visitors dropping by to engage with pupils.

Author Victoria Finlay’s book ‘The Brilliant History of Colour’ was inspired by Hexthorpe pupils who emailed her to ask how Ancient Egyptians made paint.

Victoria, a recent guest on Radio 4’s ‘Museum of Curiosity’, answered their questions and attended the school’s arts week in what she said was a “terrifically enjoyable visit!”

Pupils thrilled Victoria by creating their own book, ‘A Horrible History of Art and Colour’, using facts they gleaned from Victoria’s work, such as that yellow paint was once made from the urine of cows on a mango diet.

The school also played host to Sam and Mark, stars of CBBC and Pop Idol, for its recent Book Week.

Pupils from other schools joined Hexthorpe for the session. Sam and Mark talked about their book’ ‘The Adventures of Long Arm’ and signed copies.

Their book is targeted at seven to 11 year olds and is described as a “laugh out loud adventure” about a boy who becomes a superhero.

Teacher Phil Sheppard said both events were great successes. Of the latest visit from the CBBC stars he added: “Sam and Mark were very funny and definitely helped to inspire the children to read. Many bought books and were reading them immediately.”
