With exams cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, students have this year been awarded grades by their teachers and these results have been standardised nationally.

Once they have their results students will then have the option to accept the grades, change them for marks gained in a mock exam or sit an exam in the autumn.

Heather Sandy, executive director for children's services, said: "This has been an extremely difficult year for all students, particularly those taking their A Levels and GCSEs.

"These students have worked hard throughout their school careers, and it's important this is recognised and rewarded.

"So I'm pleased that the government, exam boards and schools have found a way for students to gain the qualifications they deserve, despite the unprecedented circumstances.

"I'd like to reassure them that support is available to help them take their next step, whether that's university, employment or training."

Coun Patricia Bradwell OBE, executive member for children's services, said: "We know this has been an anxious time for students in their final year at school.

"Not only have they been unable to experience the usual end of school celebrations, but there has been uncertainty about what would happen with qualifications.

"A lot of hard work has been put in, not just by the students, but schools and teachers as well, and this should be reflected in their results.

"I wish all our students the very best for the future."

And it was good news for the students at Queen Elizabeth’s High School (QEHS) in Gainsborough.

A tweet from the school said: The national picture for A Level results is extremely variable and QEHS is working to ensure that our students end up with the A Level grades we know they deserve.

"Despite the national picture, 70 per cent of our Year 13 already had an offer from a university by 8am.

"Over a quarter of our students achieved at least two or more A/A* grades and more than two thirds achieved three or more A*-C grades."
