Woodhall Spa in Bloom launches village-wide sunflower challenge for schoolchildren

Woodhall Spa in Bloom is helping to brighten the village this summer with the launch of a brand-new Sunflower Challenge involving the children of St Andrew’s C.E. Primary School.

The project has seen around 300 sunflower growing packs gifted to pupils completely free of charge, with each pack containing sunflower seeds, compost, pots and simple growing instructions to help children get started at home.

The challenge will see children grow their own sunflowers over the summer months before entering a friendly competition in September to find the tallest sunflower in Woodhall Spa.

The Sunflower Challenge forms part of the wider Woodhall Spa in Bloom initiative — a community-led initiative working to make the village brighter, greener and more welcoming for residents and visitors alike. Since launching earlier this year, volunteers have already spent hundreds of hours improving public spaces through planting, tidying areas, environmental projects and community activities.

The overall aim of the project is to bring the community together while supporting Woodhall Spa’s entry into the East Midlands in Bloom competition — a regional campaign celebrating community pride, environmental responsibility, biodiversity and local involvement.

David Charles from Woodhall Spa in Bloom said: “This project is exactly what Woodhall Spa in Bloom is all about — bringing the community together and getting young people involved in something positive, fun and outdoors.

"We’re hoping to see sunflowers popping up all over Woodhall Spa this summer and create something the whole village can enjoy.”

Children will be invited to submit photos of their sunflowers in September, with prizes, trophies and awards planned for the tallest growers.

The initiative has already generated excitement within the school and wider community, with organisers hoping it will inspire families to get involved in future Woodhall Spa in Bloom activities and events.
