'A really exciting point' - New, £24.9m healthcare facility taking shape on old Boston United FC ground

A new, £24.9m healthcare facility is starting to take shape at the former home of Boston United FC – helped by 50 lorry-loads of concrete and a 200 tonne crane.

Work on the Boston Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) officially got under way off York Street in March.

CDCs provide a wide range of diagnostic tests, such as CT scans, MRI scans, ultrasounds and x-rays, and can be found in a variety of settings, even shopping centres.

The plans are being brought forward by Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group (LCHG), which has partnered with construction specialist MTX Contracts on the project.

Following the demolition of the old York Street stadium, construction teams have been carrying out groundworks.

Two weeks ago, 50 lorries poured 395 cubic metres of concrete needed to create the slab on which the Boston CDC will stand.

Then, last week, a 200 tonne crane arrived to install the steel frame and roof.

The external doors and the windows are next and the building is expected to be weathertight by the end of this week.

Brickwork has also been completed up to the damp course and will continue around the building in the coming days.

The build has utilised so-called ‘modern methods of construction’, a range of building methods that are designed to be more efficient and effective than traditional construction techniques.

A hospital spokesman said: “This is a really exciting point in our construction timeline for Boston Community Diagnostic Centre, as the building is now taking shape.

“Using modern methods of construction, the site has been transformed in just a week and anyone passing by will now be able to get a much better idea of the scale of the building.

“We’re currently on track to deliver this £24.9million development as planned in early spring 2027, bringing additional capacity for diagnostic testing and a fantastic new NHS facility to Boston.”

When finished, the facility will offer two new MRI scanners, two new CT scanners, X-ray facilities, three ultrasound rooms, a DEXA scanner, eight consultation rooms and dedicated space for audiology services.
