Care home in Horncastle celebrates ‘Outstanding’ CQC rating

Staff at a care home in Horncastle are celebrating receiving an ‘outstanding’ rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following its very first inspection.

Glenholme Senior Living’s Thimbleby Court residential care home opened in the town three years ago and so this is the first official visit by the CQC’s inspectors.

The service received an overall ‘Outstanding’ rating with that rating in both the Effective and Caring assessment categories, alongside ‘Good’ ratings for being Safe, Responsive and Well-led, recognising the exceptional standards of care, compassion and leadership that have become the foundation of life at Thimbleby Court.

The inspection highlighted the home's commitment to delivering truly person-centred care, where every resident is supported to live a fulfilling, active and meaningful life.

Inspectors praised the warm and inclusive culture created by the team, noting the home's innovative approach to reducing social isolation through strong community partnerships, hobby groups, quiz events and opportunities for residents to remain connected with those around them.

The report also recognised Thimbleby Court's focus on promoting independence and wellbeing. Residents benefit from personalised exercise and rehabilitation programmes, supported by a qualified exercise therapist, helping people maintain their strength, confidence and mobility. Families told inspectors they had seen noticeable improvements in their loved ones' health and quality of life.

The inspectors said people consistently reported positive experiences of living at the home and described care that was kind and responsive to their needs.

They stated: “People and relatives told us staff knew them well and took time to understand what was important to them. This supported a personalised approach where people felt valued and treated as individuals.

“People described being able to make choices about their daily lives.” They were supported to maintain independence and take part in meaningful experiences, which contributed to improved confidence and overall wellbeing.

Relatives spoke positively about the difference care had made, with some describing clear improvements in people’s health and quality of life. A relative told the inspectors: “I cannot tell you how many people I have recommended the home to. I recommend it to anybody. If [my family member] had to be moved I would be horrified. I want them to end their days there. It is worth every penny.” Another relative said: “They love it there. I can bring the dog in. I love it. I have recommended to my friend.”

The CQC found that staff consistently delivered compassionate, personalised care, taking the time to understand what mattered most to each individual. Residents were encouraged to contribute to decisions about their care, while thoughtful adaptations, including the use of contrasting tableware to support people living with dementia, helped create an environment where everyone could thrive.

Inspectors also highlighted the visible leadership throughout the home and the team's commitment to continuous improvement, innovation and maintaining the highest standards of care.

Hazel Whittaker, Thimbleby Court’s Home Manager, said: “I am immensely proud of our recent CQC inspection rating of outstanding! The team really deserve this recognition for their dedication and hard work at Thimbleby Court.“

Esther Bannister, Director of Senior Living at Glenholme, said: “What a fantastic achievement. We couldn’t be prouder of the Thimbleby Court team and our wider team at Glenholme Senior Living.”
