Boston Borough Council has now issued a strong warning over the issue, saying the Covid-19 virus can survive for up to three days on stainless steel.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Did someone infected with COVID-19 use that slide within the last three days? Did you just put your three-year-old on a contaminated climbing frame?

“Play equipment is still off-limits to keep you and your family safe, to protect ourselves, our NHS and to save lives.

“Studies have shown that the COVID-19 virus can survive for up to 72 hours on stainless steel (World Health Organisation).

“Despite knowing this, tape is still being ripped off local play equipment and park benches every day, and people – including young families – have been seen using the outdoor play parks and gyms.”

Cllr Chelcei Sharman, portfolio holder for parks and open spaces, said: “We’re all tired of the lockdown, but every time the tape gets torn off, someone has to go back out and replace it. We are trying to keep everyone safe, so please work with us.

“As soon as we’re told we can re-open these facilities, please trust that we will do so for everyone to enjoy them again. Unfortunately, until then, we have no option but to tape them to try and help prevent the spread of this awful virus.

“Thank you to everyone who has adhered to lockdown guidelines, stay safe, protect our NHS and save lives.”
