Mayor leads commemorations for the 75th anniversary of VE Day in Skegness

In light of Covid-19 restrictions, a moving ceremony was held in a safe environment behind closed doors at the Hildreds Centre, attended by a small number of members of the Royal British Legion, councillors and the Town Crier, Steve O'Dare, who gave the proclamation.

Coun Dannatt paid tribute to manager Steve Andrews and the staff of the Hildreds Centre for the carved display of The Fallen Three, representing the Army, RAF and Navy who served in the Second World War, which can be enjoyed by the public when restrictions are eased.

In his speech, he read a few words from the address given by Prime Minister Winston Churchill on the day war ended in Europe in 1945.

"It is a time when we should be celebrating with family and friends, but we are faced with these challenging times ahead due to the Covid-19 outbreak," said Coun Dannatt. "That doesn't mean we can't celebrate at home in our gardens and remember those who fought for our freedom.

"Who would have thought that 75 years on we faced an invisible enemy?"

Some residents celebrating the day at home were later in the morning treated to a fly-past by the Red Arrows display team, who headed for Ingoldmells before turning along the coast to fly over London.

The two minutes silence at 11am was held in many streets, where residents are holding tea parties in their front gardens this afternoon.
