Mum and daughter raise more than £1k in gruelling 24-hour danceathon for NHS

A Lincolnshire mum who says the only exercise she gets is walking her dogs has beaten all odds by completing a 24-hour danceathon for the NHS - with the support of her 13-year-old daughter.

Vicky Limb says she was dancing along to music while ironing, wondering what she could do to help during the Covid-19 crisis - and leaped into action in minutes when inspiration struck.

The executive coach who is doing a Human Resources degree at Lincoln University, said: "People have been doing such amazing things but I don't have a talent so I was struggling to think of what I could do.

"I'd been inspired by a 12-year-old boy who scaled 'Everest' by climbing the stairs more than 2000 times - I thought there must be something I could do.

"There I was jigging along to music while doing the ironing and it came to me - I could do a 24-hour danceathon.

"I got right on it and found out about how I could set up a crowdfunding page and the idea was to go 'Live' on Facebook.

"We started at about 5pm on Saturday and my 13-year-old daughter, Felicity, joined me and managed an incredible 15 hours.

"It was quite grueling. My friends thought I was crazy as, before this, all I did was walk the dogs.

"The first 15 minutes seemed an age and I was beginning to wonder how I could carry on for 24 hours - but then Facebook Live kept timing out every 40 mins and sorting that out and grabbing a quick toilet break made the time go quicker.

"At first we had lots of people following us but later in the night when most people had gone to bed and it got quiet, that was the hardest.

"But after 5am, when people started waking up and checking in, they spurred us on and we started doing requests for different music.

"We danced to everything - rock, pop, country - anything people wanted.

"Felicity did so well by completing 15 hours before she started flagging.

"Some of our friends do triathlons and they kept asking my husband how I was doing. But I carried on - I don't think they could believe it."

After the danceathon, Vicky and Felicity, from Friskney, had raised more than £1,000 including gift aid on the Virgin Money giving page for NHS Charities Together.

"We were delighted with that," said Vicky. "I couldn't believe I had done it. I got in the bath about 6.30pm and thought I was fine until I tried to climb out after a soak and ended up in a heap on the bathroom floor.

"I was expecting to struggle to get out of bed on Monday morning but was surprised. Apart from going shopping for my mum later than usual in the afternoon, I felt fine - but every now and then I get pins and needles in my feet just to remind me what I have done.

"It was worth it, though."
