Free keep active course for those with dementia

Dementia sufferers and their carers are reminded not to miss out on new free sessions to keep active and avoid becoming isolated.

Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) is to run a total of nine ‘Keep Healthy, Keep Active’ courses in South Holland and South Kesteven this year where people living with dementia can meet and enjoy activities such as quizzes, cooking, gardening, laughter yoga, creative sessions and seated exercise.

The next course will be on Mondays, 1pm to 3pm, at Carlton Scroop and Normanton Village Hall, Newark Road, Carlton Scroop, Grantham NG32 3AR, beginning on Monday, May 23.

Each course will run for five weeks. Many of the sessions will be led by specialist activity providers.

Jan Gould Martin, LCVS senior health and social care officer, said: “Staying physically active, emotionally stimulated and involved in the community is vital for people with dementia and their carers.”

Alzheimer’s Society in Lincolnshire is encouraging residents to confront dementia during Dementia Awareness Week (May 15-21).

Charity staff and volunteers will be providing information about dementia and how to live well with the condition at events across the county.

Today (Wednesday) there will be a dementia awareness talk for students at Kesteven and Sleaford High School and tomorrow an information stand at Ashfield Lodge care home in Sleaford from 10am – 12noon to promote local Alzheimer’s Society support and the Lincolnshire Dementia Family Support Service.
