Jeri and Horatio organising a virtual run for cancer charity

May 28 will see Jeri Simpson and her eldest son, Horatio, aged six, taking part in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival. He will be in the junior 1.5km race and Jeri,30, will be taking on the full 26.2 miles.

Jeri explained: “I have been running for just over a year now, and have completed one marathon locally (the Spires and Steeples Challenge) and by the time this race comes round I will have also completed the Brighton marathon. Horatio has been inspired to run through seeing me run and the enjoyment I get from it.

“We chose to run for Macmillan because I have seen both my nan and dad affected by cancer and I want to do something to help a charity that helps support people through cancer.”

Jeri is in training, running, on average, 45 miles per week. She said: “I am expecting the marathon to be a challenge but, with the training I have put in, a fully achievable one. Horatio is running twice a week and taking part in other sporting activities.”

Jeri added: “We are organising a virtual run to help us raise the funds.”

The event is called Hulk Smashes Cancer and will be held during May when participants will have the entire month to walk, run, swim or cycle 2.62 miles.

Jeri said: “We chose a range of sports and a short distance to encourage children, non runners and people who have suffered an injury to take part.”

Runderwear have donated two pairs of Runderwear for the person who does the fastest 5km virtual run and there will be a prize for the greatest distance. Entrants will be required to send proof to a Facebook page or email address using any activity tracker app. It costs £10 to enter in the UK, £15 overseas, with group discount available (includes the medal and postage).

The event can take place wherever people want. “We have had people from as far as Germany enter,” said Jeri.
