The staff put together images of themselves and former patients for a collage to go in the United Lincolnshire Hospital Trust’s 100th birthday card for the captain, who has raised an incredible £29m for the NHS by doing laps of his garden.

Unfortunately, the collage was not included in the trust’s card, but the team at the unit had also put a video together while creating the collage, and set it to the version of You’ll Never Walk Alone released by Capt Tom and Michael Balls, which hit the number one spot last week.

Kate Lyon Rush of the unit said: “The neonatal team and parents have taken it upon ourselves to make and send our own card for Captain Tom and share our video as far and as wide as possible.

“This is in honour of, and with gratitude to, this man, our hero, from our little heroes and us. We are very privileged and exceptionally proud to have cared for these babies and their families during their time of need and want to show the world that ‘together, we can achieve many things’.

“As Captain Tom said: ‘We’ve had problems before, and we’ve overcome them’.”

As part of his birthday celebrations today, he was given the honorary title of colonel, and was set to enjoy a military flypast, which set of from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnhsire, in his honour. He has receieved an incredible 140,000 birthday cards.
