Community art exhibition opens at Joseph Banks Centre
Horncastle welcomed an evening of art, music, and community spirit as the Art Aspirations exhibition officially opened on Saturday, November 1, at the Joseph Banks Centre.
The free event drew visitors from across Lincolnshire to celebrate creativity in six market towns: Horncastle, Louth, Spilsby, Wainfleet, Wragby, and Alford.

Guests explored unique artworks inspired by local stories and met the talented artists behind the projects. Highlights included:
Spilsby Mural – A striking piece by Joanna Pass, now adorning the rear wall of All Wrapped Up Café.

Horncastle Mosaic – A collaborative work by Rachael Clark-Harris and Nils Wilkinson, celebrating the town’s heritage.
Wragby Meeting Tent – A vibrant textile installation led by Harriet Shonfeld, created with community input.
Alford Original Song – Crafted by SoundLincs and Ian Enright: ‘Deep Roots, Wide Wings’ captures the town’s character through music.
Louth Sgraffito Tiles – Intricate designs from workshops led by ceramic artist Ruth Stanley.

Wainfleet Conversations – Emma Chippendale is creating some fine art in Wainfleet through conversation and sketches with residents.
The programme, coordinated by Kate Giffen, Market Towns Officer, and funded by the East Lindsey Investment Fund, demonstrates how creativity connects people and places, fostering pride and participation in local culture. Art Aspirations is a creative placemaking initiative designed to bring communities together through art, storytelling, and shared experiences. Over the summer, residents and visitors collaborated with professional artists to create works that reflect the identity and heritage of Lincolnshire’s market towns. Kate Giffen, explained: “Art Aspirations has been all about celebrating local creativity and giving people a chance to shape the cultural life of their towns. It’s been inspiring to see how these projects have sparked conversations, built connections, and created something truly special for each community.”
The launch was attended by Councillors Craig Leyland, Graham Marsh, Fiona Martin and Ru Yarsley.
Coun Martin praised the event: “It was a pleasure to attend the event on Saturday. To see the finished beautiful artwork of Horncastle was truly amazing. The piece truly reflects the wonderful town we live in and the amazing talent within this town.”
The exhibition will run until the end of November. Guests are also invited to share ideas for future exhibitions and community projects.
